Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: International

The first international organization that appealed to me is the Association for Childhood Education International.

Association

Mission Statement: “To promote innovative solutions to education challenges and inspire action that creates positive, sustainable futures for children and youth worldwide” (https://www.acei.org/).

I chose this organization because work for the education of all children and they have a special interest in meeting the needs of children that are most fragile and vulnerable. They are an international organization that is committed to improving early childhood education and development and making sure they have access to quality education (https://www.acei.org/).

I couldn’t find anywhere on their site where they have any jobs available. I only see where you can become a member and/or donate. In order to join the organization you go to the website and download an application, fill it out, and then mail it in with your membership fee. Depending on what membership level you want will depend on the amount you have to pay. The memberships can be one or two years. When you donate the money goes toward making sure children of all nations have access to quality education. The donation amount can be whatever you want and it is tax deductible.

The second international organization that appealed to me is NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

NAFSA

Their mission is “NAFSA believes that international education advances learning and scholarship, fosters understanding and respect among people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, is essential for developing globally competent individuals” (https://www.nafsa.org/).

Chose this organization because they are international and they work to advance policies and practices that ensure a more interconnected and peaceful world today and for the future (https://www.nafsa.org/). They are the voice for international education and exchange.

They had several jobs on their site and I was able to search for other positions as well. The job that appealed to me was International Student Coordinator. This position is in Oxford, Ohio at Miami University. The International Student Program Coordinator will provide program and activity coordination for the Global Partner Summer School program, bringing international students to the Miami University campus and Oxford community for a cultural immersion experience. The coordinator will also promote the personal development of the enrolled international students need to adjust to a new culture, build an inclusive, welcoming, and vibrant environment at Miami University (https://www.nafsa.org/).

The coordinator is responsible for following university policies and procedures related to purchasing, accounts payable, parents, faculty, and staff with diplomacy, discretion and judgement (https://www.nafsa.org/). You have to be available evenings and weekends. Three references are required.

A Bachelor’s degree is required and experience with program planning for international students; experience with travel logistics and budgets; evidence of excellent attendance record.  This position is not eligible for H1B sponsorship. They desire a Master’s degree; Chinese language proficiency; experience living, working, or studying in Asia; experience developing, refining, and implementing effective international student retention strategies and programs (https://www.nafsa.org/).

The third international organization I chose is UNICEF.

UNICEF

UNICEF believes that all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential – to the benefit of a better world (www.unicef.org). They have worker over 70 years to improve the lives of children and families. They fight for the rights of every child seeking safe shelter, nutrition, protection from disaster and conflicts, and equality (www.unicef.org).

I chose this organization because they defend the right for every child to have a chance.

They had so many job opportunities all around the world. The job that appealed to me was Administrative assistant in the Ukraine. The job closed March 1, 2018. The Administrative Assistant is responsible for executing a broad variety of standardized administrative tasks for the respective section(s) requiring thorough knowledge of UNICEF administrative procedures, processes and policies (www.unicef.org).

The key functions of an administrative assistant is:

  • Travel
  • Invoice processing
  • Contracting of consultants and service providers
  • Events and conferences
  • Property management, office equipment, vehicles
  • General Administrative duties (www.unicef.org).

They want the education to be done completed secondary education preferably supplemented by technical or university courses related to the work of the organization. A minimum of 5 years working as an administrative or clerical work experience. You have to be fluent in English and Ukraine (www.unicef.org).

This would be a great opportunity if I could speak Ukraine. I love the way they want to make sure all children and families are treated fairly.

  1. Regina,

I found some international ECE organizations that were similar to yours. NAFSA was the most apepaling to me because of their interest in respecting diversity among all students around the world. Many of the organizations that I found were not explicitly dedicated to this concept, but I believe that as an international organization, respecting and valuing diversity would be the priority. Thank you for your the insight and information that you have shared. I will most certainly look into these organizations.

  2. Regina,
I enjoyed reading your three international organizations. Each one was amazing because they do something special for each child. UNICEF is one of the organizations I chose as well because of how they are there for the children’s rights so that they can be safe from harm. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Regina,

I appreciate your review of NAFSA.I believe that they key to a better life for many in other societies is international education opportunities. The policies and practices have to be in place and enforced for the international students to be able to benefit from the program.

  4. Regina,
I also chose UNICEF. It is an amazing organization and I think that it would be interesting to work for them overseas. I think going to Sri Lanka or Africa would be amazing. They do so much work for children who really need their help. I have been on the ACEI website. It is an interesting website and has lots of information about what they do and how they help children. I think it is a great program.
